Masking: A Sacred Ritual

My whole philosophy with skincare is that it should not be a chore, it should be a treat. In some cases, a retreat. Masking is a preferred way to combat skin concerns that persist even after applying the "perfect" daily skincare routine. A mask with whole plant and organic ingredients can give your skin a boost of nutrition and targeted results. The problem is, creating the time! I prefer to mask in the evening while watching a movie, binge watching a show, or writing a blog about masking ; ). My multi tasking brain likes to get the most out of an hour or two of sitting. If I'm not feeling too tired, masking while taking a bath is the ultimate luxury! Other quick ways to get in some skin TLC is masking while washing your hair or shaving your legs. Anyway you can get it, masking will be beneficial.

Here's a few easy steps to getting the most out of your skin ritual. Make this ritual your own and customize it as you see fit. Don't energetically have time to exfoliate? Don't worry about it, any masking is good masking. If you feel you need sleep over applying two masks, listen to your needs. Some of the products I will suggest can be used as a cleanser, exfoliator, and a mask! Perfect for one or two step people.

Step One: Preparation

Prepare your skin to receive the nutritious ingredients in your mask by first cleansing your skin.

Step Two: Exfoliate

Exfoliation should be done gently and regularly about twice a week. Exfoliation is a wonderful way to remove dead skin cells, brighten and tone your skin. If you can only perform one mask, I would choose exfoliation. I will suggest some products that are two in one, meaning they exfoliate and detox/moisturize like a mask when left on.

Step Three: Mask

Apply your mask on your face and neck, leave on for a few minutes. Read further for detailed descriptions of each mask we carry as well as user instructions.

Step Four: Hydrate and Protect

After removing your mask, apply your regular hydration sprays, serums, and/or balms.

Step Five: Move Lymphatic Fluid

If you still have another 30 minutes left of your movie, end your ritual with Jade Rolling or performing Gua Sha.

Below are detailed descriptions of each mask mixed with my personal experiences with the masks, which skin type I think it's good for, and how to use it. If you feel you have multiple skin types, for example, sensitive and oily skin, many of the masks I've listed can be used for multiple skin types. Choose the mask that fits most of your skin concerns or types. If you'd like to purchase the mask, simply click on the highlighted mask name. Happy Masking!

Normal/Dry (N/D), skin that almost never breaks out, rarely has sensitivity issues (rosacea or eczema) but experiences occasional dryness.

Acne prone (A), skin that experiences whiteheads, blackheads, pimples and/or cysts on a regular basis.

Oily/Combination (O/C), skin that is particularly oily all over the face or only on the forehead, nose, and chin.

Matured/Sun Damaged (M), skin that is hyperpigmented, has fine lines, acne scars, or deeper wrinkles.

Sensitive (S), skin that is stressed and that experiences redness, heat, rosacea, and/or eczema.

Make a paste of 1/2 tsp of mask powder to 1 tsp of water. Gently massage into your face for 1-3 minutes. Rinse off or leave on for another 5-10 minutes as a *detoxifying mask. Aroma: Lime Margarita

Active Enzyme Exfoliator from Josh Rosebrook. A powerful, yet gentle, resurfacing exfoliation mask that can be gently rubbed in or left on. This mask works well for most skin types but I highly recommend it for reducing acne scars. Mix a Lima bean size amount with a bit of water to help spread the product on your skin. Gently massage for 1-3 minutes, rinse off or leave on for up to 30 minutes. Aroma: Chai spice latte with honey. N/D, A, O/C, M

Honey Berry Mask from Laurel Skin. A sweet honey based mask that gently exfoliates and brightens. Honey is a natural enzyme that "eats away" dead skin cells, making it a perfect, gentle and effective exfoliation mask. A very simple mask to apply that does not need to be rubbed in. Apply a Lima bean size amount onto skin with wet fingers. A bit of water will help spread the honey. Aroma: Strawberry Jelly N/D, A, O/C, M

Almond Rose Exfoliant from Laurel Skin. This product is a three in one multitasking miracle in a jar! It can be used as a cleansing paste, exfoliator, and when left on it will hydrate and nourish the skin. Simply make a paste with 1/2 tsp mask powder to 1 tsp water. Let sit a little to create a jelly like consistency. Massage onto the skin for 1-3 minutes, rinse off or leave on for up to 20 minutes to hydrate and nourish. Aroma: Oatmeal and a bit of roses. Cacao Antioxidant Mask from Josh Rosebrook. Cacao powder is rich in collagen building antioxidants. It also *detoxifies, rejuvenates, and purifies the skin. Plus this mask smells like the Chocolate Orange Sticks from Trader Joe's. You also do not have to mix this mask making it very user friendly. Just smear a large Lima bean size amount onto your skin and leave on up to 45 minutes. When you remove this mask, slight pinking of the skin is normal and is an indication of increased circulation. Aroma: Chocolate Orange Sticks from Trader Joe's. N/D, A, O/C, M

Advanced Hydration Mask from Josh Rosebrook. This unique mask contains super rich butters, like Shea and Mango, as well as herbs to help lock in much needed moisture and promote circulation. This mask is gentle enough to use everyday and very easy to use. First spray your skin liberally with a hydration spray such as the Hydrating Accelerator Spray from Josh Rosebrook. On wet skin, smear a Lima bean size amount. Leave on for up to 45 minutes. Wipe mask off with a dry wash cloth. Aroma: Sea Breeze candle. N/D, M, S

Antioxidant Mask from Laurel Whole Plant Organics. Personally, this is my go to mask for myself at home. This mask also contains organic Cacao powder as well as nourishing and *detoxifying herbs. Every time I use this mask I always receive many complements on my skin. Laurel masks usually come as a powder and must be mixed with water. Mix 1/2 tsp of mask to 1 tsp of water. Apply onto your skin and leave on for 20 minutes. Do not let your Laurel mask dry, once the mask dries the herbs are no longer active. Wet your fingers with water and sprinkle them onto your masked face or reuse an empty hydrating bottle by filling it up with tap water and spraying your mask when it starts to dry. Better yet, wear your Laurel mask in the bath tub and allow the steam from the water to keep your mask moist. Aroma: Grassy, earthy. N/D, A, O/C, M
